The Ronde van Vlaanderen is characterized by a demanding course through the 'Flemish Ardennes,' featuring numerous short, steep, often brutally cobbled climbs known as 'hellingen' (bergs) and flat cobbled sections called 'kasseien.' Key challenges include the relentless succession of these ascents like the Koppenberg, Oude Kwaremont, and Paterberg, often tackled multiple times in the finale. Narrow roads force a constant battle for positioning, while unpredictable spring weather with wind and rain frequently adds another layer of difficulty. Success requires immense skill, strength, and tactical acumen on these iconic, punishing Belgian roads.
